STAGE ONE: LANDSCAPE GRADUATE

  • There are 7 categories of membership in HKILA: Honorary, Fellow, Professional, Associate, Student, Affiliate and Retired Members.

 

(1: RESPONSIBILITY QUESTION) GETTING STARTED: CATEGORIES OF MEMBERSHIP

 

  • You successfully finished the MLA degree in HKU, is it safe to assume you got the academic qualification for the admission to professional practice examination (PPE)?

Yes, HKU MLA programme is accredited by the HKILA

 

  • Can you apply for PPE at this stage?

No

 

  • Is it essential to be a member of HKILA in order to become a RLA in HK?

Yes, you need to be an Associate member to take the PPE.

  • A proper Practical Training record(PTR) include: Time Record (Annex A1), Project Record (Annex A2) and Supervisor Assessment Report (Annex A3). Which can be download from HKILA website.

  • Your experience are recorded in terms of working hours only in the Practical Training Record (PTR) sheet.

No, the context of the experience are equally important, and be recorded in PTR.

 

 

  • If your employer is not a professionally qualified member of HKILA, can your experiences in the company still being qualified for the PPE?

Yes, in that case you could organize an external supervisor as a mentor and help you on the Practical Training Record (PTR).

 

  • What would be the formats of the PPE oral examination?

Practical experience presentation and Q&A.

 

 

 

STAGE THREE: LANDSCAPE DESIGNER

  • Candidates who “passed” Part 1 of the PPE (Written Examination) but “failed” Part 2 (Oral Examination) may be exempted from repeating Part 1 the following year when taking the PPE.

Section 1 – Professional responsibilities, liabilities, and ethics

Section 2 – Legal system and development control

Section 3 – Professional practice management

Section 4 – Construction contracts, and pre-tender & tendering procedures

(3: RESPONSIBILITY OPTION) PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EXAMINATION

  • You have been working (LA related) for 2 years in HK, recorded all your practical training experience and was a Graduate Member of HKILA. But you still get rejected for admission for PPE, Why?

You have to be Associate Member of HKILA for 12 months.

 

  • After graduation from HKU, you worked in LA firm for 2 years in mainland and have no working experience in HK. When applying for PPE in HKILA, are those experiences being considered in the requirement?

Yes, partially, still need at least 1 year of experience in HK territory.

 

  • You have been working for 20 years in the LA field, but havent take the PPE. Can you be a supervisor for candidates who wants to take the PPE and certify their practical experiences in the Practical Training Record (PTR)?

No, A supervisor have to be Landscape architect and a Professional ember of the HKILA

●       1.If the design is defective or substandard the Landscape Architect could be held liable and responsible for any financial loss caused to the third party. What is not counted as liability for landscape architect in HK in the following choices?

STAGE FOUR: LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

 

(4: LIABILITY OPTION)

 

Q1:The Board shall not register a person as a registered landscape architect unless—

 (a) he satisfies the Board that he has had 1 year’s relevant professional experience in Hong Kong before the date of

his application for registration

(b)he is a member of a landscape architectural body the membership of which is accepted by the Board as being of a standard not less than that of a member of the Institute

(c) he satisfies the Board by the declaration in writing that he is competent to practise as a landscape architect;

(d) he is a fit and proper person to be registered

 

Q2:A person whose name is not on the register may describe himself as a landscape architect if he

(a)describes himself by reference to a membership of any body or institute of landscape architects formed outside Hong Kong which description does not imply that he has the right to practise landscape architecture in Hong Kong under the description of landscape architect.

(b) At each place where he carries on the business of landscape architecture, the business is conducted under the supervision of a registered landscape architect who does not act at the same time in a similar capacity for any other person other than for a firm or company that has substantially the same beneficial ownership and management as the person (where the person is a firm or company)

(b) At each place where he carries on a multidisciplinary practice, that business, so far as it relates to landscape architecture, is under the full time control and management of a registered landscape architect who does not act at the same time in a similar capacity for any other person other than for a firm or company that has substantially the same beneficial ownership and management as the person (where the person is a firm or company).

(4: RESPONSIBILITY OPTION) CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • What are the objectives of  the HKILA Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Policy?

to encourage a culture of CPD within the membership;

to co-ordinate and maximise CPD activities within the HKILA;

to facilitate member awareness of CPD Programs and opportunities;

to facilitate dissemination of CPD information to members; and

to provide guidelines for self evaluation and auditing of individual member’s personal CPD Programmes.

  • Fellow and Professional Members of HKILA are required to complete a minimum of 12 CPD points during each calendar year.

 

 

STAGE FIVE: REGISTERED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

 

Q3:The Registrar may remove the name of a registered landscape architect from the register if he has noticed that the registered landscape architect has(choose the wrong answer)—

(a)  applied to discontinue his registration;

(b)  ceased to be ordinarily resident in Hong Kong for one year;

(c)  failed to renew his registration;

(d)  ceased to hold a qualification by virtue of which he was registered.

 

Q4: A registered landscape architect commits a disciplinary offence if he (choose the wrong answer)—

(a)  commits misconduct or neglect in any professional respect

(b)  was not at the time of his registration under this Ordinance entitled to be registered;

(c)  without reasonable excuse, fails to attend before an inquiry committee when summoned either as a witness

or as a person in respect of whom the inquiry committee is meeting

(d)  has been convicted in Hong Kong or elsewhere of any offence which may bring the profession into disrepute

and sentenced to imprisonment, whether the sentence is suspended or not

  • A HKILA member has been violating the Code of Professional Conduct (e.g. Actively take part in projects that destroy Natural habitat of endangered species, destroying cultural heritage site, maliciously attacking reputations of professional colleagues) and is damaging the reputation of LA as a professional. What can you do as a Council member of HKILA to ensure the code of conduct is being respected?

Members of HKILA can be expelled by a secret ballot vote taken at a meeting of all the members of the Council.
